Volunteers from McGuireWoods and Capital One’s legal department collaborated with the National Veterans Legal Services Program (NVLSP) for a training session and pro bono legal clinic on Sept. 13, 2023, to assist veterans in the Richmond area.
As part of its Lawyers Serving Warriors® program, NVLSP provided an hourlong CLE training at McGuireWoods’ Richmond office on how to represent veterans seeking discharge upgrades (e.g., from “general” to “honorable”). The designation characterizing a military service member’s separation determines whether the individual is eligible for GI Bill benefits, which help pay for college or other career training programs for the veteran and/or the veteran’s family members.
Altogether, 23 volunteers from McGuireWoods and Capital One attended the training, assisting several veterans in person at the clinic, with plans to assist more clients on a rolling basis.
McGuireWoods pro bono director and Charlotte counsel Angie Zimmern, D.C. associate and McGuireWoods Veteran Lawyers Network pro bono coordinator Drew Austria, and Richmond partner Bryan Fratkin led the firm’s role in this effort.
