Charlotte Triage is a partnership between corporate and outside counsel in support of, and working in partnership with, Legal Aid of North Carolina and the Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy.
The program fills a desperate need in Charlotte, which is grappling with economic mobility challenges and an especially vulnerable homeless population despite being one of the most prominent hubs of the U.S. financial services industry. Charlotte Triage has brought together dozens of local law firm and corporate legal department leaders to raise awareness of the unmet legal needs in the community and drive intentional pro bono volunteerism in those areas.
Charlotte Triage launched with a Sept. 5, 2018, CLE training event that attracted more than 300 legal and other professionals. To date, more than 400 volunteers have trained for the program and helped more than 350 clients, with the number growing by the week. Charlotte Triage has six primary areas of focus: housing eviction defense; increasing access to healthcare insurance coverage by providing assistance during open enrollment; criminal record expunctions; assisting victims of human trafficking; driver’s license restorations; and assistance with Social Security matters.
